Transcranial Magnetic
Stimulation

What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS therapy) is a non-invasive treatment in which magnetic stimulation is applied to the cranium. When used to treat depression, this stimulation is specifically applied to the part of the brain and nervous system that is involved in mood regulation. It is believed that by applying strong magnetic pulses to the brain, neurological changes occur in the areas of the brain associated with the symptoms of, for example, depression. All cells in the body produce energy (at an atomic and chemical level), and therefore produce an electromagnetic field. The cells and tissues in the body communicate via these electromagnetic fields. If there is impairment on any level within the body tissues, relating to atomic function, cell metabolism or electromagnetic exchange between cells, then this may lead to illness and disease throughout the body. The understanding with TMS therapy is that through the application of powerful magnetic stimulation, brain changes occur on all of the above levels, which move the body towards healthy function and healing, thereby reducing the symptoms of ill-health in the patient.

What is Mental Health?

In recent years, the term mental health has become part of the vernacular thanks to media and popular culture. Previously, many people did not know or hear about the resources that are available to them when it comes to taking care of themselves in a larger sense. Mental health refers to a person's overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental Health and TMS Therapy Phoenix

In 2008 transcranial magnetic stimulation was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of unipolar depression in patients who had not responded to psychotherapy or medication. About 50-60% of patients do not respond to first line treatment for unipolar depression, these first line treatments refer to psychotherapy and antidepressant medication. TMS therapy has been found to be effective in up to 30% of these patients who have not responded to these first line treatments. TMS treatments have also been found to be effective in maintenance treatment for people with unipolar depression. There is further research to suggest that TMS may also be effective in treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Other disorders for which TMS therapy may be helpful include bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, smoking cessation, and pediatric depression. Large clinical trials are currently underway in order to establish the effectiveness of TMS treatment in these and other conditions.
